StealthCon - FAQs
Who?
StealthCon is an Ad Hoc collection of like
minded Webmasters and Search Engine Optimisers in Australia getting
together in a Pub to drink beer and talk about the state of play in what we
do. In an industry that is very much online-centric, communication is also mostly online and with people right across the globe. Hence, any
chance to meet up with these people in real life and chew the fat, so to
speak, is not to be taken lightly.
What?
StealthCon follows the original idea of
Pub Conference which itself
started with an innocent question from Mr Mike Mackin over at
WebmasterWorld saying in
this thread that he
was popping over to the UK and would anyone like to get together at a pub
for a drinking and networking session. Much organisation by rcjordan and NFFC
and other members followed and the resulting event
was an amazing collection of webmasters from around the globe who gathered for free-form networking.
This became known as PubConference, and has spawned many similar events, of which StealthCon is but one.
The idea of organising an Australian event had in ours
heads for some time, but I'm afraid until now time has been against us.
Chris actually started the ball rolling in 2005, organising a dinner and
drinks session to coincide with a visit to Australia by
Shak, a well-known international
operator in the Adwords arena at the time.
Then in 2006 we decided to start organising the
events properly, starting with the Melbourne event in March of 2006. After much
meeting of the Steering
Committee (sic) we decided that the format worked so there was no need
to change anything. Besides, most Aussies traditionally go to the pub
after work on a Friday evening anyway. Therefore, Stealthcon is just a
formalisation of current "industry best practices".
When?
Various times throughout the year, watch this site to
announcements.
Where?
So far, events have taken place
both in both Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Our chosen venue has been the Belgian Beer cafe in those cities, for no special reason other than
they are nice places to meet and have a civilised
conversation. The Belgian Beer Cafe does not sponsor the event, and we
may change venues at any time, but for now, the BBC suits us just fine.
Why?
Webmasters generally spend their time working and
communicating online, but it is often the face to face discussions that
hold the real gems.
The Name?
Ha! Many people want to know "from whence came the
name?" Well, it is a bit of an inside joke. But don't worry, if
you don't know the answer, then you're not missing much. Besides, it's
about the networking, not the name. Or, in other words, move on please,
nothing to see here.
